Live Cleanup or Fix It in Post: How Creators Should Think About Noise
If the audience hears your audio as it happens, clean it live. If there is an edit between you and the audience, record it as cleanly as you can, keep the raw file, and do the heavy cleanup afterward. The two approaches are not competing versions of the same thing. They run under different constraints, they fail in different ways, and they suit different kinds of work. Treating them as interchangeable is how people end up with a stream that sounds like it is underwater or a podcast episode that can never be repaired.
What real-time processing gives up
A live noise suppressor has to make its decisions in a few milliseconds, using only the audio it has already heard. It cannot look ahead to see that the sound starting now is the first syllable of a word rather than a chair creak. It also has to share the computer with everything else you are running, which for a streamer often means a game, an encoder and a browser full of tabs.
Given those limits, modern real-time tools do remarkably well with steady noise such as fans, air conditioning and computer hum. Where they strain is with sudden sounds and with quiet speech. What post-production gives you
